A group of scouts from Kingwood Boy Scout Troop 1377 attended a High Adventure backpacking trip to the Grand Canyon on July 9-18. The group consisting of Shane Hoffart, Ryan McGuire, Nick Cannon, Jonathan Cannon, Jake Trujillo, Cameron Coker, Sam Deupree and Cody Heisner hiked from rim to rim over a five-day period where the temperature reached 120 degree heat index. The scouts exceeded 4,100 feet in elevation, almost straight up, the last day to exit the canyon.

Children of all ages and adults can sign up through Aug. 6 for summer reading programs across the Harris County Public Library system, all designed to make reading fun. Instead of only logging credits for books read, participants also get points for activities they try, from learning to code a computer and solving a puzzle to trying a craft or taking a dance class. Reading options have also been expanded to include magazines, e-books, comics and audiobooks. After reading 10 books or completing 10 activities, or any combination of both, participants receive a prize.
More than 12,000 single-family homes are projected to be built in the Lake Houston area by 2025 as developers chase the area’s undeveloped land as well as its rapid job and population growth. Many factors, such as a desirable school district, retail development and job growth, are driving demand. Between 2010 and 2015, the Lake Houston area’s total population grew to 257,759 by an estimated 33,000 new residents. The population is predicted to rise by 12 percent to 288,599 by 2020.
