Jayne Brandon, Kingwood Middle School science teacher, and KMS seventh grader Talon Balcom were recently chosen to participate in the 2017 JASON Learning Expedition, an opportunity that allows middle school students and teachers to work side-by-side with engineers, researchers, and scientists at the Cape Eleuthera Institute in the Bahamas. Brandon and Balcom will join 20 other teachers and students in the Bahamas for the program this summer.
The Humble ISD Board of Trustees recently recognized several National Merit Scholar Finalists at the Board meeting held on April 11. National Merit Scholars make up less than one percent of the 1.6 million students who take the Pre-SAT test each year and are determined by their PSAT scores. Humble ISD had 13 National Merit Finalists from high schools across the District who will be notified later this year if they have been chosen as National Merit Scholars.
At the Humble ISD Education Foundation gala last Friday night, the District announced the 2017 Teacher of the Year, and with that honor came a brand-new, 2017 Buick Encore. Out of ten finalists from schools across the district, Carlee Kennedy, dance teacher at Atascocita High School, received the Teacher of the Year honor. After receiving the award, Kennedy's new red Buick, which was sponsored by Bert Brocker of Texan GMC, awaited her outside.

A Kingwood Park High School senior recently took home top honors at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's art competition. Emily Callens, KPHS senior, was named Grand Champion for her three-dimensional art sculpture of a calf wrangler. Her piece was auctioned for $88,000, earning her the top honor. This award comes just a year after she received Grand Reserve, the second highest honor.

The public and residents of Kingwood were invited to Kingwood Royal Brook’s “Bring Spring” Showcase of Homes this past weekend, April 1st and 2nd. Each day, the model homes hosted spring-inspired demonstrations by local experts. There were tips on organizing your home, decorating for spring, and cooking demonstrations by a local chef and restaurant owner. There was also a food truck with free BBQ and craft beer, and a dessert bar.
